Montana hot springs have long been known as sacred healing spaces for the Native Americans who gathered centuries ago to soak in the healing natural waters. And one of Montana’s oldest hot springs sits right at the center of it all. 

Located between Helena and Butte, Boulder Hot Springs feels like a place frozen in time—in all the best ways. Construction of its permanent bathhouse (and tavern) began in the 1860s, and by the late 19th century, the property had become a resort that once catered to celebrities as well as presidents, with reports that Teddy Roosevelt once stayed here.

Today, the property prides itself on being a natural healing place, accessible for everyone. Its casual vibe and welcoming spirit add to its allure, while its geothermal waters remain the main attraction. As it has for centuries, steam rises from naturally occurring springs that pour hot, mineral-rich water into the facility’s main outdoor pool, while indoor hot plunges and steam rooms offer year-round soaks. 

The historic inn keeps the property among Montana’s most storied hot springs destinations, with its main building designed in classic California Mission and Spanish Revival architecture that earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places. Surrounding it are acres of beautiful open Montana landscape that offers hiking, wildlife viewing, and plenty of other outdoor activities.

The facilities also offer a spa, retreat center, and, of course, guest rooms for those who choose to stay and soak. Do note that they are an alcohol-, drug-, and smoke-free property with a true focus on wellness and healing.
