It’s no secret that Colorado’s small mountain towns are rich in gold-mining history. The historic Argo Mine and Mill in Idaho Springs is one of the state’s most legendary mining complexes, dating back to 1893. And while weekend warriors from Denver love to stop in Idaho Springs on their way back from skiing in Summit County to grab a beer or pizza at Tommy Knocker’s, they rarely take the time to stop and learn about the town’s mining history. Don’t be like them.
The Argo Mill & Tunnel is one of the most recognizable historic landmarks in Idaho Springs. Back in its heyday, it processed over $100 million in gold—worth over $2.6 trillion in today’s dollars—making it one of the most productive mining operations of its time. Today, it remains one of the largest and most well-preserved gold mills in the world.

A new project spearheaded by local residents restored the mill and tunnel for public tours and added its most recent addition, the Mighty Argo Cable Car. The high-speed, year-round gondola carries visitors 1.2 miles from the historic Argo Mill up Rosa Gulch, climbing roughly 1,300 feet in elevation before reaching its summit at Miner’s Point. 27 golden-hued glass cabins showcase the area’s mountain views, making the short 10-minute ride to the top feel like it’s not nearly long enough.
Reaching a summit of 8,800 feet in elevation won’t take your breath away, but the views from Miner’s Point will, making the somewhat pricey tram ticket completely worth it. For pedal pushers, you’ll be happy to know the gondolas feature North America’s first Doppelmayr bike cabins. Haul your bike to the summit, where you can connect to over 15 miles of new trails via the Virginia Canyon Mountain Park. Don’t worry, hikers, you’re allowed as well.
Before your trek back down, pull up a seat and enjoy an Argo Ale and a local favorite miner’s pastry (an upscale version of the Cornish hand pies workers took into the mines) from the Sun and Moon Saloon stationed at The Outpost. But what shouldn’t be missed, nor could you miss, are the views from Miner’s Point. A pedestrian plaza opens to scenic mountain views that stretch as far as the eye can see, to the Continental Divide, and four of Colorado’s fourteeners. It’s a perspective that reveals both the scale of the Rockies and the enduring legacy of the mining town below. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit MightyArgo.com.
