At Año Nuevo State Park, a rugged coastline and one of the best-protected wildlife habitats, including its elephant seal refuge, define this somewhat remote destination. Along California Highway 1 north of Santa Cruz and south of San Francisco in an area known as the San Francisco Peninsula, the park protects one of the world’s largest mainland breeding colonies of northern elephant seals.
Each season brings a new way to experience the seals. Winter brings births and breeding. Spring and summer draw animals ashore to molt. In fall, young seals return to the beaches, adding another chapter to a coastal cycle that continues whether visitors are watching or not.
If you want to see the seals, planning matters. Visiting means entering their habitat on its terms, with designated viewing areas and seasonal guidelines that give the animals room to rest and reproduce. During the breeding season, from Dec. 15 through March 31, you’ll need a docent-guided walk to view seals. From April through November, visitors generally explore the viewing route independently with a free park-issued permit.
Fairly far from the park’s main area, you’ll most likely hear the seals before you see them. The outing covers three to four miles, including uneven ground and sand dunes, with various viewing platforms along the way.
Allow time to walk amongst the park’s distinctive terrain rather than treating the seals as a single roadside attraction. Coastal prairie, wetland marshes, dunes, and coastal scrub shape the scenery, while ocean bluffs offer views of a 19th-century light station and another coastal hike that takes you to Año Nuevo Point, a major migratory bird location for birdwatchers.
To see the seals, start at the Marine Education Center, where you can get your permit and more information. Wear layers, carry water, and follow park staff instructions. Pets are prohibited, and the best photos are taken from the permitted distance.
