Norris Hot Springs

You might not give this natural hot spring in Montana a second glance, but that would be a mistake. Located in the small town of Norris in Southwest Montana, about an hour west of Bozeman, Norris Hot Springs is home to an original wood-soaking hot springs pool.

Dedicated to preserving its historical charm, the owners of Norris Hot Springs have kept the wood-planked pool, engineered by local miners over a century ago, in use and grandfathered as a historic treasure that will never change. Fed by natural, mineral-rich water that emerges from the earth at about 130 degrees, the spring waters are cooled to a comfortable soaking temperature before bubbling up through the wood planks. The result is a relaxing retreat that feels just as natural and charming as Montana.

Unlike larger resort-style hot springs, the atmosphere here feels intimate and unpretentious. Its geothermal pool may be modest, but its natural mineral waters hold tremendous healing powers, known as “Water of the Gods,” and were revered as healing waters for all, making hot springs a neutral place where tribal members came together and didn’t fight.
